Following on from the highly successful ignite concerts in the Hall's Cafe concert and the Family ignite acts in the Elgar Room, Learning & Participation are proud to announce the release of Junior ignite in spring 2011! Learning & Participation will be working with Music for Youth to recognize young talented musicians from around London and the south of England and give them a unique performance opportunity at the Royal Albert Hall.

National Science Week - Sunday 13 - Friday 18 March 2011

As part of National Science & Engineering Week, Y Touring Theatre Company will be performingMind The Gap. (A play about mental illness and neuroscience). The performance will be followed by a live debate with a leading scientist. This play will be appropriate for KS3, KS4 and post 16 students.

Royal Albert Hall Chronology

8 April 1867

Queen Victoria signs the Royal Charter under which the hall is operated. A 999-year lease on the site was acquired at one shilling (five pence) per year.

10 April 1867

Foundation works begin.

20 May 1867

Queen Victoria lays the foundation stone.

7 November 1867

The first brick is laid by Mrs. Henry Cole.

December 1870

Queen Victoria visits the construction site. Her comment: "it looks like the British Constitution".

25 February 1871

A full-scale sound test shows a major acoustical problem: echoes, reverberations and even some blind spots. A calico velarium awning is hung beneath the dome to correct the acoustics. It stays in place until 1949.

29 May 1871

Opening.

June 1874

The awning is lowered to improve acoustics further. The state-of-the-art ventilation system breaks down and is not re-instated until 2002.

1888

The hall is lit electrically for the first time. The lights were installed by Anglo-American British Electric Company.

1949

The velarium is replaced by an aluminum canopy.

8 October 1950

The von Trapp family of Austria sings at the hall. The family was the inspiration for Rodger's and Hammerstein's musical "The Sound of Music".

1969

Fiberglass diffusers are installed in the roof.

1971

The hall is refurbished inside and outside for its centenary.

1991

The first sumo wrestling turnament ever held outside Japan in 1500 years is staged in Albert Hall.

1996

A lottery grant is awarded for the Halls re-development.

January 2000

The hall is closed for a full month to refurbish the stall seating.

26 June 2003

Stephen Fry interviews J.K. Rowling in the hall. She reads extracts from the fourth novel in the series "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". The reading is webcast live and followed by 28 million viewers.

15 July 2003

The newly constructed south porch is unveiled. It is part of the Building Development Programme. The porch includes a 60 000 piece mosaic, a 200 seast cafe & restaurant ('Cafe Consort') and a new box office.

Royal Albert Hall - The Proms

The Proms is one of the famous eight-week summer period of every day classical music shows and other events held annually at the Albert Hall since moving from the Queens Hall in 1941. The event was founded in 1895, and now each season contains over 70 shows in the Albert Hall, in addition to a sequence of events at other venues across the UK on the last night. Albert Hall that is situated at Kensington road was opened in May, 1871. It is a big building of oval form in the style of the Italian revitalization, the materials of the concealment being entirely red brick and terra-cotta. The larger external diameter is 272 ft., interior 219 ft.; the less significant exterior 238 ft., interior 185 ft. The wall painting above the balcony was executed by Messrs. Minton, Hollins & Co., and is separated into compartments consists of allegorical designs by Messrs. Armitage, Armstead, Horsley, Marks, Pickersgill, Poynter, and Yeames. There are two box entrances -- on the east and west -- with a private doorway from the Horticultural Society's Gardens on the south side, and separate entrances on either side for the balcony, the gallery, and the area, and for the platforms on either side of the great organ. The interior, which is amphitheatrical in construction -- like, for example, the Coliseum at Rome -- is not very appropriate to any purpose for which it is ever likely to be required except musical performances on a large scale.

Gwent youngsters set to play at Royal Albert Hall

Hundreds of Gwent youngsters will head for London next week to perform an ambitious new work at the Last Night of the School Proms in the Royal Albert Hall.

Gwent Music Support Service looking to explore the Welsh heritage and identity of the area and uses around 800 musicians and choristers from schools and music groups.

They will be spread into a number of ensembles around the hall performing several parts of the piece's four movements and coming together for an explosive last movement.

he work involves a choir of 550, made up of pupils from primary and secondary schools in Newport, Cwmbran, Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Raglan, Caldicot, Caerleon, Rogerstone and Pontypool, and members of Greater Youth and Torfaen Music Centre Gospel Choirs.

Eighty trumpeters and 40 trombonists will also perform, along with African drummers, percussionists, timpanists, a Celtic band, the Great Gwent Cello and Bass Ensemble, harpists, flautists, clarinettists, and alto and soprano saxophonists.

The piece will also make use of the Royal Albert Hall organ.
